Kitten Care For First-Time Owners
August 15, 2023

Are you considering adopting a kitten? Cats are one of the easiest animals to keep. Providing your feline pal with food, water, clean litter, and veterinary care will go a long way towards keeping her happy and healthy. However, you will definitely have some pet parenting in front of you. Little Fluffy can be a handful—literally—during that adorable toddler stage. A local Bellevue, WA vet offers some tips for new kitten owners in this article.

How Do I Make My Home Safe For A Kitten?

Little Fluffy will want to investigate every inch of her new kingdom, and sort out what she can and can’t eat, play with, hide in, or sleep on. Do some basic petproofing by removing potential hazards, such as strings, cords, and wires; toxic plants; small and sharp objects; and toxins. Kittens can fit into some tiny spots, so we also recommend closing off areas behind and beneath furniture. Ask your vet for more information.

How Do I Make My Kitten Grow Up Gentle?

Kittens want to feel safe, loved, and comfortable. Simply petting and snuggling your feline buddy will do a lot as far as teaching her to accept—and enjoy—being held and handled. Be prepared for some rough play. As Little Fluffy tries to get the hang of being a cat and maneuvering those claws and teeth, she may bite or scratch you. Don’t punish her: just say ‘No’ or ‘Play nice’ in a stern tone, then ignore her for a while. It’s also important to reward her for good behavior. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Where Should My Kitten Sleep At Night?

Kittens get chilly easily. Make sure little Fluffy has a warm, comfy spot. You can get a thermal cat bed and add some soft blankets. You can also get a microwaveable heating pad for pets, which is safer than a plug-in one. Of course, you also have the option of letting your kitten snuggle up to you. Just keep in mind that if you allow your feline friend to do this as a kitten, you’re not going to be able to keep her out of your bed once she’s all grown up. One option is to set up a comfy bed for your kitty beside you. This is also safer if she’s little enough for there to be a concern about rolling over onto her.
