Holidays With Senior Pets
December 15, 2022
Season’s Greetings! For many of us, the next few weeks are going to be pretty hectic. It’s always great to spend quality time with our loved ones at this special time of year. Pets are part of the family, too! However, all of that hustle and bustle can be tough on Fido and Fluffy, especially once they reach their golden years. A local Bellevue, WA vet offers some advice on spending the holidays with an older pet in this article.

Guests

Are you having guests? Make sure they know about any medical conditions your furry buddy has. For instance, if your cat has arthritis, she may not want to be picked up. If they’re staying over, it’s also best to ask them to keep their door closed. This can help prevent mishaps, such as a hairball on someone’s suitcase.

Food

There’s nothing wrong with giving Fido and Fluffy something special, but you will need to be careful. Fatty foods are definitely off the menu, as are other unsafe items such as meat on the bone, grapes and raisins, avocado, chocolate, and raw dough. Try to keep your pet on their usual menu. Sudden dietary changes may upset that furry belly. Ask your vet for more information.

Gifts

Keep Fido and Fluffy’s age in mind when shopping. Opt for comfort items, such as soft beds and, for dogs with thin fur, cozy sweaters.

Schedule

Older pets are usually very much creatures of habit, and can get quite distressed by changes in their daily agendas. If you’re having a party, pay some extra attention to your furry friend. On busy nights, provide them a comfy, quiet spot where they can sit out the festivities.

Décor

Fido and Fluffy probably won’t be as mischievous as a puppy or kitten would, but you still need to be careful with things that could be hazardous. That includes small or sharp objects, such as ornaments, ornament hooks, tinsel strands, and small manger pieces. Ribbons, garlands, and light strands are also unsafe, as are many seasonal plants, such as holly and ivy.

Love

Time truly is the most precious thing in the world, and we just don’t get enough of it with our pets. Enjoy some quiet quality time with your furry best friend. Remember to take lots of photos! Happy Holidays! As your Bellevue, WA animal clinic, we are here for you.
