Adopting A Shelter Dog
October 3, 2022
October is Adopt A Dog Month! We’re more than happy to help raise awareness about this great cause. However, adopting Fido is a huge decision, and not something to take lightly. A Bellevue, WA vet offers some advice on adopting dogs below.

Don’t Overlook The Unwanted Dogs

Some pets simply have a hard time finding forever homes. Don’t automatically go past that sad senior Poodle, or the little Maltese that can’t see very well. Sometimes the unwanted pets turn out to be the best companions!

Don’t Expect Perfection

Dogs end up in shelters for a variety of reasons. Sadly, many come from bad situations. These experiences can be traumatizing, and can cause them to be fearful or reactive. Fido may also need to work on his training or socialization. Be patient, and don’t expect perfection. It’s a beautiful thing to watch a pooch blossom with love!

Choose The Right Pup

Dogs are definitely not one-size-fits-all. An active family may do best with a playful, high-energy Labrador, while someone who prefers reading or playing games might find a quiet senior pug is their best match. Consider Fido’s age, size, breed, temperament, and history. You’ll also be able to spend time with him before deciding.

Be Prepared To Commit

It’s absolutely heartbreaking when dogs get adopted, only to be returned. Fido gets very attached to his humans, and can get extremely depressed when separated from them! When you adopt a pup, you may be signing on for well over a decade of pet parenting. Don’t proceed unless you’re sure that you’re ready for that sort of commitment.

Expect The Unexpected

Even if you’ve had dogs all your life, your new pooch may very well be extremely different than the pets you had before. Fido may also have some quirks you aren’t aware of yet. For instance, he may be frightened of thunderstorms, or uneasy around certain types of people. Keep your canine friend leashed, and pay attention to how he reacts to various stimuli and situations.

Enjoy The Experience

Dogs have a truly extraordinary ability to form strong bonds with their masters. However, it will take time for that relationship to grow and blossom. Enjoy the time you have with your canine friend, and give Fido time to adjust. Do you have questions about your pet’s health or care? Call us, your local Bellevue, WA animal clinic, anytime.
